Warranty

"But what if I buy my car privately or the dealer offers no warranty?"

Whether you buy your car from a dealer, a private sale or even from an auction, you can now buy a used car warranty package direct from the Warranty company. This means you can cut out the middleman and choose the right product for you at the right price.

This is not always the cheapest option but is useful if you are purchasing a vehicle privately or from any source where there is no used car warranty available.

Why buy a Warranty?

A car is made up of thousands of moving mechanical parts and despite improvements in reliability and technology, things can still go wrong. There is often no definitive way of telling when a car may suffer from mechanical failure no matter what checks or maintenance operations are carried out.

A good used car warranty will cover your costs in the event of mechanical failure. All the major mechanical components should be covered but wearable and perishable items such as hoses, tyres, brakes and batteries are not usually covered.

Which Warranty?

When purchasing an after market used car warranty the cheapest may not always be the best. They are a few points you should look for before deciding which is the best for you.

Exclusions

Some Warranties give long and impressive lists of the items covered but with so many parts on a vehicle this can be misleading. It is preferable to also have a list of exactly what is not covered, this will give you a clearer picture of what you are getting for your money.

Many companies will not cover "wear and tear", even on insured parts, or they may have a time restriction on such claims. Some may offer this cover but charge a premium. All car parts are subject to some extent of "wear and tear" so make sure you know the parameters of this definition.

It is important to understand the difference between the definition of "mechanical failure" and "wear and tear". A used car warranty is not designed to cover all your maintenance costs incurred in the everyday use of your vehicle. It is there to give you peace of mind in the event of unforeseen mechanical failure of the major components of your vehicle.

Remember to read and understand all exclusions and clauses of any Warranty before deciding if it is right for you. If you are not sure then contact the company and ask the relevant questions. Understanding your policy up front can save a lot of hassle later on should you ever need to claim.

Consequential damage

What if a non-insured parts fails and damages an insured part? Not all used car warranties will cover you in this event.

Betterment

You may have to contribute a percentage of the parts and /or labour costs of a claim if the repair improves the condition of your vehicle. For example; a brand new part is used to replace an original part that has failed. This is known as"Betterment". These percentages are usually charged on higher mileage vehicles on a sliding scale basis depending on the age and mileage.

A Table of "Betterment" charges should be available from the Warranty company.

Claim Limits

Nearly all warranties will have a limit for the amount they will cover per claim. This can range from a couple of hundred pounds up to a couple of thousand. The size of the claim limit available may depend on the age and mileage of the car you are purchasing.

Customer Requirements

To keep your warranty valid you will be expected to maintain your car to a certain standard. This will include servicing you car within the correct time and mileage requirements. There will be a reasonable tolerance period of time or mileage to allow you to do this.

You may also be required to service your vehicle at a dealer or an approved service centre. check with the Warranty company and make sure you are aware of any such requirements.

You should also check where you can take your vehicle in the event of a claim, many companies will have an extensive nationwide list of approved repairers. Make sure there is one close and convenient to you.

Choosing an independent warranty can be daunting as there are many available and so many factors involved. To make life easier for you we have looked at various independent packages and chosen one that offers good cover.

The product that impressed us the most is provided by Warranty Direct. We feel that the level of cover provided and the additional benefits included make this the best value non-trade package on the market.

Before you buy a Warranty anywhere else, judge for yourself by visiting the Warranty Direct used car warranty website. We are sure you will be as impressed as we were.
