How to apply for a private number plate transfer

In order to transfer a private number plate from one vehicle to another you must be the registered keeper of the vehicle to which the number is currently assigned. If you are purchasing a new private number plate, the company selling the plate should handle the paperwork for you.

You can send your application by post to the DVLA or take it to your local DVLA office (Full list below).

You will need the following:

  • The completed V317 application form available from your local DVLA office or from DVLA Swansea.

  • V5 registration documents for both vehicles. If the vehicle is brand new and unregistered you will need a V55 form.

  • A current MOT test certificate for both vehicles. If the vehicles are under 3 years old then this does not apply.

  • The current transfer fee of 80.

  • If visiting your local DVLA office you will need the expiry date and serial number of your vehicle licence (Road tax disc)

  • If you need to tax either vehicle at the same time, you will need a completed V10 Licence Application Form or the V11 Licence Reminder Form, your certificate of insurance or valid cover note, and payment for the current rate of Road tax for your vehicle.
